The city of Pisa

Pisa

Just about an hour drive from Villa Tuscany is Pisa, best-known for its world-famous architectural icon of the Leaning Tower. Founded as an important port city by the ancient Romans, the city was conveniently situated on the banks of the Arno River a few kilometers from the sea. When the mouth of the river eventually silted up years later, the port’s function became useless and a weakened Pisa was soon attacked by Florence just up the river. From that point Pisa’s power and importance in the Italian political scene was reduced.

Today Pisa is a lively university town and a major stop on many tourist itineraries of Italy, not just to view the famous bell tower (brave visitors can climb to the top) but its stunning setting, the Campo dei Miracoli. The so-called “Field of Miracles” is an extraordinary grouping of four sacred buildings: the massive Duomo, leaning Bell Tower, domed Baptistry and “Camposanto” or Cemetery. Each building is decorated in precious white Carrara marble excavated from the famous quarries nearby. Surrounded by a bright green lawn, the glistening white marble of the medieval buildings is a remarkably beautiful and surreal vision.
